The Gate House is in a fantastic location, close to Ambleside with south facing views across the River Brathay towards Lake Windermere. Only a short 10 minute walk to a large variety of amenities in nearby Ambleside such as shops, restaurants, churches, school and library etc. With a variety of fine country walks from the doorstep, including direct access to Loughrigg via a hidden path right at the top of the garden. The views from above the house looking across Windermere are amazing.
There is plenty of parking for 3 vehicles at the front, and you can also park off the road at the side of the house.
The Gate House is a traditional grade II* listed Lakeland house believed to date back to the 17th century. In the living room there is a spice cupboard dating to 1680, and a concealed priest hole in the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. The house is reputed to have been part of the dowry to Catherine of Braganza for her marriage to Charles II.
The property sleeps 8 guests in three double bedrooms (the master has 1 x double bed and 1 x single bed making this a family room with an en-suite and an additional seating area), and one single room. There is a large family bathroom on the first floor, and a loo/cloakroom on the ground floor off the hallway.
The large kitchen has ample seating for family meals, and there is also a separate dining room for more formal meals, with a serving hatch from the kitchen.
There are a few seating areas for everyone to spread out and relax – the main sitting room, another sitting area at the back of the house and a sitting area in the master bedroom.
A huge enclosed garden leading up to a gate at the top which will take you straight onto the footpath leading to Loughrigg and beyond. The garden also has an outside seating area and gas BBQ, and traditional planting to provide colour all year round.
