A 500 year old house steeped in history, Sleeps 14, 3 bathrooms, ground floor WC, separate dining room and two living rooms.
Waterside House has an interesting history – located Close to Newby Bridge Halt (steam train station, part of the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway), and a short walk to the Swan Hotel & Spa.
The house dates back to 1580, with a later addition to the rear which includes the second living room dated 1671 by a stone over the fireplace. It has been part of the Taylor estate since it was built and it is said that the daughter of an affair between Charles Stuart (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and Clementina Walkinshaw was spirited away in 1746 and lived at Waterside House until her death. Known as the Finsthwaite Princess, there is much local folklore around this legend – she is buried in the local Finsthwaite Churchyard, with a stone erected in 1913.
The house is beautifully appointed and recently redecorated – a stone built property over 3 floors with a large garden and barns, looking out towards Newby Bridge past the narrow-gauge railway which is part of a steam railway line, with stops at the nearby Newby Bridge Halt station on its way to Lakeside and the Fell Foot Ferry Pier.
There are 6 bedrooms, which include a twin bunk room on the top floor with a children’s den. The other 5 bedrooms are well proportioned and include 3 doubles and 2 twin, with large bathrooms on each floor including a WC on the ground floor. The dining room can comfortably seat 12 with another dining table in the kitchen, and with two living rooms there is ample space to relax and enjoy the magic of this historic and warm old Lakeland farmhouse.
The property also has a converted barn which can be used for functions or entertainment space, with trestle tables and benches available for the open space and the option of outside catering. Otherwise the barn is let separately and can sleep 3, with a single and a super king-size bed on a mezzanine floor above a snug living room area around a wood burning stove and a very large, open living space.
*Please Note* As the photographs clearly show, Waterside house does have some low ceilings/doorways and the garden/access is shared with Waterside Barn.
