Try your hand at wild swimming – the Lake District is home to some of the most beautiful spots to take a dip in. If you want to swim whilst being surrounded by majestic views, head to Elter Water, a large, stunning, pool in the winding River Brathay, where the picture-perfect setting of Langdale Pikes can be seen in the distance. If you’re visiting during the colder months of the year, you’ll want to get nice and toasty after your swim, so head to the nearby Britannia Pub. You can warm up by the fire, with a pint of good ale and good food. Don’t forget to try their legendary Coniston Bluebird – a former Supreme Champion Beer of Britain.
Just under a 10-minute drive from Elterwater, avid rock climbers will find their spot of heaven. One of the many places that has been dubbed “the birthplace of rock climbing” – Langdale is filled with an abundance of great crags and routes for all abilities. From classic diffs like Middlefell Buttress to Dawes Rides a Shovelhead, there’s a climb for everyone.
If you and your family are looking for an action-packed day, look no further than the forest at Grizedale where you’ll find the home of adventure – Go Ape. You can explore the verdant forest on high rope adventures, whether it’s on the zip lines or the treetop rope-bridge crossings. Exploring the great outdoors has never been more fun!
In the centre of Ambleside, you’ll find White Platt’s Recreation Ground where you and your little ones can play the best mini golf games in the lakes. The area has a 9-hole mini-golf course, and when you’re ready for the next challenge, there are also three full size tennis courts and a large smart bowling green. For the teeny tinies in your family, there’s also an infant play area, with plenty of seating to keep your watchful eye on them.
In the village, make sure to pop into Slates Coffee and Kitchen, where vegans and vegetarians are catered for. It makes for a lovely post-hike stop, offering freshly made pizza, pasta, and burgers. For those just wanting to satisfy their sweet tooth, the Apricot, Orange and Almond Shortcake has your name written all over it!
