Things to do in the Lake District with Kids

Windermere & Coniston

Brockhole

Brockhole is undoubtedly one of the best activity centres in the Lake District. Whatever the age of your kids, there is a wide choice of activities, from caving to archery. If you’re looking for fun things to do together, you can book a family kayak tour on Lake Windermere. Little ones will also be enchanted by the Woodland Faerie Trail, mini tractors and adventure playground.

World of Beatrix Potter

Adults and kids alike will be spellbound watching the charming characters of Beatrix Potter’s well-loved novels, come to life. Meet Peter Rabbit, Jemima, Mr Tod, Tommy Brock and more. When you step outside into the Peter Rabbit Garden, be careful to watch out for Mr McGregor!

Go Ape Grizedale

The go-to adventure spot in the central lakes, Go Ape Grizedale is the ideal attraction to visit with kids that are full of beans. Families can take the leap into the unknown and try the Treetop Challenge, or the Zip Trekking adventure together.

Western Lakes & Coast

Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway

If you’re looking for a family day out in The Lake District, where you can get stuck in whatever the weather, this is the ticket. The narrow-gauge steam railway passes through some of the most spectacular scenery in the UK, with plenty of stops along the way so kids can stretch their legs and explore. Make sure you swing by the museum and café before you head home for a treat or two.

Muncaster Castle

No ordinary castle and gardens, Muncaster is packed full of amazing, family friendly activities, making it a great day out with the kids. Active children will be spoilt for choice for things to do in the gardens, as there is an adventure playground and an adventure quarry complete with a giant swing. Don’t miss a visit to the Hawk & Owl Centre before you go!

Wastwater Alpaca Trekking

If your kids are animal lovers, they will be begging for you to visit this family farm near Wastwater. You’ll get the chance to meet alpacas in person and take the adorable furry friends on walks around the valley for an experience you’ll never forget. Stunning views, and cute animals- a match made in heaven!

Keswick & Northern Lakes

Via Ferrata, Honister Pass

The Via Ferrata is an unforgettable experience, where adults and children can strap in, and admire one of the most stunning places in The Lakes from up high. A great way for the whole family to step out of their comfort zone, the ‘classic’ experience is fully guided, and is made up of sturdy holds, so it is suitable for children from 10 plus. Little ones can get their own dose of excitement, as the mine tours Hoister also offers are open for kids of all ages.

Puzzling Place

If you’re staying near Keswick, pop into the Puzzling Place for a mind-bogglingly fun experience! Kids will have a blast in the ‘anti-gravity room’ and enjoy playing with all the crazy curiosities in the ‘Eyelusion Exhibition.’ We’re sure they will want to return time and time again!

Lake District Wildlife Park

Pack a picnic and prepare for a walk on the wild side, at this family-friendly hotspot. Kids and parents alike will be excited to meet over 100 species of wildlife, from ring-tailed lemurs to flamingos. The keeper talks are well worth attending as they are informative and engaging for youngsters, helping them to learn about the world around them.
