Tucked away between the larger Langdale and Coniston valleys, Little Langdale is a peaceful and enchanting hamlet surrounded by some of the Lake District’s most beautiful and lesser-visited scenery. The area is known for its unspoilt charm, historic packhorse bridges, and easy access to both gentle walks and more adventurous fell routes.
Little Langdale is accessible by car from Ambleside via the A593 and a scenic single-track lane, or on foot from Elterwater or Tilberthwaite. The nearest train station is at Windermere, about 10 miles away, with bus and taxi connections available as far as Elterwater.
Highlights here include the picturesque Slater’s Bridge, a 17th-century packhorse bridge across the River Brathay, and the atmospheric Cathedral Cave, a vast former slate quarry. The quiet lanes and paths are ideal for walking and cycling, and the views towards Wetherlam and the Langdale Pikes are unforgettable.
With its tranquil setting, historic features, and connection to the wider Langdale and Coniston areas, Little Langdale is perfect for those seeking a quieter, more secluded corner of the Lake District while still being within easy reach of nearby villages and sights.
