What better way to experience the largest lake in England than first hand, on a lake cruise with your pet? Windermere Lake Cruises offer great value trips from multiple locations on the lake, including Bowness, Ambleside, and Lakeside, where you can stop off for a dog walk and jump back on. Fun for all the family, including the pets, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway covers 7 miles of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. With several request stops along the way, you can have a proper day out whatever season you visit.
Dogs are welcome on leads in Lowther Castle’s 130-acre gardens, which were lovingly restored in 2008 to their former 19th-century glory. There are plenty of fantastic walks to explore. More than just a grand stately home and gardens, Brockhole is the perfect place to visit from your dog-friendly cottage in The Lakes. Dogs on leads are more than welcome in the grounds, exhibition area, care terrace and orangery.

Or head to The Mortal Man a quirky, traditional English pub that is always welcome to dogs, walkers and holidaymakers. Operating as an alehouse since 1689, famous figures like Wordsworth, Southey and Coleridge all met here in their day.
If you’re looking for a classic Lake District experience and some good old-fashioned hospitality, then head to Threlkeld Coffee Shop. The café is run by locals, who just happen to be amazing bakers. Pop in to sample outstanding coffee and cakes. Or, to try the best scone you’ve ever had with your dog by your side, look no further than Mr H’s Tearoom. Surrounded by incredible scenery, they serve tasty classics like soup, cakes and sandwiches, to give you that well-needed pick-me-up to keep exploring! Lastly, The Gather in Ennerdale is a pet-friendly, trendy, community-run café and local shop that’s definitely worth a visit from your dog-friendly cottage.
For scenic views and multiple spots for your dog to swim, try the Elterwater Waterfalls Walk. Or, head to Grizedale Tarn for a medium-length, beautiful forest walk to stretch your dog’s legs amongst breathtaking scenery. For a lakeside walk, the Windermere West Shore Walk is a classic. Its stand-out feature has to be the Victorian Wray Castle, and the pleasant grounds that surround it by the lake. For a challenge, try the stunning Derwentwater Circular. Passing through ancient woodland, and along the shores of the lake, it’s no wonder that this walk is a favourite with tourists and locals alike.
