If you’re looking for a tranquil holiday destination, tucked away from the busy tourist spots, but still close to the heart of the Lake District, look no further than Skelwith Bridge. This charming hamlet is home to only 150 people, but with its very own waterfall, well-renowned café and many accessible walking routes, you’ll find plenty to explore.
Located in South Lakeland, three miles from Grasmere, between Elterwater and Ambleside, you couldn’t be better placed to take in all the sights. Not only is it just a few miles from the A591 linking the area to Lake Windermere, the Stagecoach 516 bus route also stops here, allowing you to explore the Lakes via public transport.

Whether you’re looking to ramble, relax, climb, cycle or swim – there’s plenty to do in and around Skelwith Bridge. For keen walkers, there are so many walks that you can explore from your doorstep. Head to the top of Loughrigg Fell for stunning views over the nearby Loughrigg Tarn, and the surrounding countryside. If you fancy a longer walk, you can extend to route around Rydal Water, past Fieldfoot Wood and round back to the village. Be sure to take the path to Rydal Cave, a huge natural cavern with an amazing outlook over the valley and forest below. If you’re out adventuring in the area and are looking for an activity to entertain the kids, geocaching is a great way to take in the sights and play a fun, sustainable and creative game at the same time.
Bringing your bike with you? There are plenty of exciting cycle trails in the area, including the cracking Langdale Valley Cycle Trail, which runs from Stickle Ghyll and runs to Skelwith Bridge, taking in breathtaking views of the Langdale Pikes.
If you want to take a more leisurely pace, there are plenty of pushchair and wheelchair-accessible paths around Skelwith Bridge, including the 2 km walk to Elterwater, which runs along the River Brathay, and past through some delightful woodland. The path also runs past Skelwith Force, a lovely waterfall that is just a stone’s through from the hamlet.
To soak up the Cumbrian culture, head to nearby Grasmere to visit Wordsworth’s home, Dove Cottage. Not only will you find out all about this legendary lake lover’s life, the cottage is idyllic, and has tranquil gardens to wander around.
Chesters in Skelwith Bridge is a delightful café bakery that’s popular with locals and tourists alike. Fab for vegetarians and vegans, they serve delicious salads, pizzas, sweet treats and coffee that you can enjoy sitting by the river. If you’re after a tasty evening meal within walking distance of your cottage, the Skelwith Bridge Hotel serves up heartwarming, and thoroughly tasty meals, and has a wide range of beers, ciders, wine and spirits available at the bar.
Venture a few minutes away to Elterwater and you have a little more choice of places to eat, including the luxurious Eltermere Inn, the quirky Slanty Lee’s Bar, and the traditional Britannia Inn.
